The Winner Is… is a story about a dog who tried to be someone he wasn’t. You’ll laugh as you read and see all of the ways this dog watched and imitated others to try to win a contest for cats. Will he succeed? You’ll have to read the book to find out! Kids are sure to love the comical storyline and illustrations. Parents and educators will like the subtle messaging and discussion questions at the end of the book. An excellent resource for teachers, library ‘story hours,’ and parents – discussion questions to further the reading/learning experience. Themes in the book include: wanting to be someone else, not fitting in, realizing you’re fine exactly as you are, feeling good and taking pride in oneself.
Winning Inspiration from Real Life
The story also addresses the importance of being ourselves, what it’s like not to fit in and sometimes, wishing we could be someone or something else. Brodsky acknowledges that our pets always love us exactly as we are. The main character of the book is based on a real dog, whose owner entered his picture into a contest to become the book’s star. Entrants were asked to make a donation to a local animal shelter for each submission they made to the contest. As a result, Brodsky’s floppy-eared dog contest provided $2,000 in donations to animal shelters.
